Why attend a book or literary festival?
Festivals of all types are fun, aren’t they? Time away from the normal routine, indulging in your favourite interest, whether it’s music, food and drink, or books of course.
But what can you expect from a book or literary festival? For me the best thing is attending workshops, readings, classes or seminars that feature an author or topic that is completely new to me. There may be readings, interviews with authors and even writing opportunities. I have enjoyed sessions at mega-events such as the Hay Book Festival as well as more cosy gatherings at the Essex Book Festival. Another huge occasion is the Cheltenham Literature Festival, an October event spread over 10 days. For both Hay and Cheltenham you have to book tickets and accommodation early, such are their popularity.
There are book festivals all over the country – just do a search for your own area, or perhaps more intriguing, look up what the local book scene is where you are planning to go on holiday. I have attended such diverse events as the Singapore Writers Festival and the North Cornwall Book Festival (see you there 21-24 September 2023).
There’s something special about hearing the voice and asking questions of an author of a book you have enjoyed. So, get searching, find a literary festival or two, book your tickets and write the dates down in your Filofax today!
